What is an Endoscopy for Dogs and Cats?
An endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera and light — called an endoscope — to examine the inside of your pet’s body.
For dogs and cats, endoscopy is most often used to evaluate the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. It allows our veterinarian to:
- Identify inflammation, irritation, or ulcers
- Locate and sometimes remove foreign objects
- Collect small tissue samples (biopsies) for further testing
- Assess ongoing symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or poor appetite
Because endoscopy does not require a large incision, it typically results in less discomfort and a faster recovery compared to traditional exploratory surgery. Most pets go home the same day and return to normal routines quickly.
This procedure is often recommended when symptoms persist or when standard imaging alone doesn’t provide enough detail to reach a diagnosis.
How Much Does an Endoscopy Cost for Your Pet?
At Forever Vets, our endoscopy procedures start at $2200. Please note, we partner with Scratchpay, CareCredit, and All Pet Card to offer flexible payment options for your pet's care.
Cat & Dog Endoscopy Success Stories
Chunky, 2 year old MN DSH, presented for possibly eating a hair tie. Radiographs revealed material consistent with a hair tie. Endoscopy was performed, and within 15 minutes the hair tie and hair wad were removed!
Chunky did great recovering from anesthesia, and his mom was happy to take him home without needing major home care.
"Luna" a 10 month old intact female presented to Forever Vets Central for abdominal swelling, lethargy, and vomiting with Dr. Max. Radiographs confirmed at least three fetal skeletons and gastric foreign material. Due to the new discovered pregnancy and concerns for the unborn pups, anesthesia was higher risk. Dr. Max decided to use a propofol constant rate infusion with very low level isoflorance (< 0.5%) and successfully removed 36 pieces of plastic from her stomach. The last update we received the patient and fetuses are doing well. She is expected to whelp in 1-2 weeks.
